While many homeowners have a traditional water heater, more people are looking into and installing tankless water heaters. Although traditional water heaters certainly have their advantages, tankless water heaters also have plenty of quality benefits.

A tankless water heater is a small heater that quickly heats water, while it’s in use. This makes this type of heater great for smaller homes that do not use a lot of water. For the energy conscious home, this is a great options as standard models use 45-60% less energy than standard water heater models.

Traditional water heaters have low output burners and require a recovery time to reheat. Tankless water heaters use high output modulating burners that heat up in about 5 seconds and supply endless hot water. This results in higher efficiency such that the tankless unit only supplies enough heat to meet demand. But also the luxury of always having a hot shower with no delay. Efficiency and luxury, who doesn’t want that?

Although it can be more expensive initially, the lifetime of a tankless water heater is at least 20 years, compared to the eight to ten year life of a traditional water heater. The tankless heater is also small and compact, not a big, bulky tank that tends to take up a great deal of space in your home.

While these are just a few benefits, check out the infograph below for more reasons it might be time to invest in a tankless water heater for your home.

Reflective insulation, or foil information has proven to be very useful in controlling temperatures in a home. Have you ever wondered how you could save money on how you heat and cool your home? Sure you have! Reflective insulation can do just that.

By using foil bubble insulation in spots where temperatures are difficult to control, such as attics, walls and underneath the floor. You can regulate the temperatures so that your heating and cooling systems don’t have to work so hard.

So how does foil insulation work? The foil works to reflect radiant heat rather than absorb it. Heat travels from warm areas to cooler ones by conduction, convection and radiation. Fiberglass and other mass type insulations only inhibit heat conductions and convection. They do nothing to stop “radiant” heat transfer. The foil insulation reflects radiant heat. It can help keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I turns your house into a thermos.

For example, the sun beats down on a home’s roof which makes the attic temperatures rise, then the heat radiates down into the house, raising the house temperature where the air conditioner has to work overtime. You can reduce attic temperatures by laying foil bubble insulation on the ceiling joists of the attic, or stapling under the roof rafters. The heat is reflected back up by the radiant insulation barrier. In the winter, radiant barrier insulation will reflect the radiant heat energy back into your home. Instead of letting is just penetrate the ceiling, floors and walls mass type insulation.

Foil insulation is required under a “staple-up” radiant floor installation. Radiant floors generate a lot of radiant energy. They are like a light bulb shining energy in all directions. We do not want 50% of that radiant energy to be lost going in the wrong direction. Most radiant floors will not work without it. So with reflective foil insulation below our radiant floors we recover that radiant energy and reflect it back into the room.

There is also Bubble Foil Bubble insulation especially designed for under concrete slabs. The bubble layers protect the foil and give the necessary air gap to allow the foil to reflect the radiant energy.

Bubble foil insulation can be put onto pipes, hot water heaters, stud walls, roofing, and basements. Foil insulation is best in instances where radiation heat is the main source for heat. Foil insulation is easy to install, fire retardant, saves energy and money, requires little maintenance, is non-toxic, is tear and puncture resistant and much more.

Once you’ve decided to integrate a radiant heat system into your home, choosing the materials to use is the next step. If you’re a DIY (do it yourself) type of guy, then you may not be 100% familiar with PEX tubing and the benefits it provides over other piping materials like copper.

PEX Tubing is a cross-linked polyethylene pipe. Polyethylene is the material from which water bottles are made. But the cross linking process stabilized the polymer such that it doesn’t break down. The federal government has given PEX tubing a 500 year life expectancy. So it will last as long as the concrete floor in which it is installed.

We carry Watts Radiant’s RadiantPEX+™. It offers toughness, flexibility and lasting durability. After going through several processes, the PEX material becomes durable, with the ability to withstand extreme temperatures both hot and cold. Here are a look at some of the other benefits you’ll get from using PEX tubing.

Flexibility – Installer will definitely appreciate the easy use and flexibility when putting the piping and tubing into place. You can bend the tubing around most corners and won’t need a coupling or fitting.

Anti-Corrosion – RadiantPEX+™ has an added EVOH oxygen barrier, protecting ferrous components of the heating system from corrosion. It has the traditional advantages of regular PEX tubing, but the oxygen barrier protects your investment in your heating system and maintains the warranties on many of its components.

Anti-Friction – if there is one downside to PEX tubing, it’s the noise that can occur when the system starts to warm up. The tubing expands when the water passes through, and it creates a friction against the floor and fasteners holding it. It almost sounds like a ticking or creaking sound. With RadiantPEX+™, Watts has added an extra low-friction layer to reduce the noise form tube expansion and aids for a smoother easier installation. We want to give you the quietest system available.

Check out Watts Radiant’s RadiantPEX+™ pricing by clicking here, or giving us a call at 888-470-2757.

One of the major benefits of having radiant floor heating systems installed in your home, is the health benefits for you and your family. Most traditional heating systems, such as baseboard and “forced air” heating systems, distributes dust and allergens that can exacerbate any allergy conditions among people in the household.

We try to eliminate air circulation in radiant heated homes, making it unnoticeable to the occupants of the room; unlike forced air heating systems that are often very noticeable. It is the air circulation spreads dust, mold, and other allergens throughout the room, which creates a much unhealthier environment for those living in the space. As ThisOldHouse.com says, “The best heating system a house can have is the one you don’t realize is there”. Since we are gentility warming the floor, there is no significant changes in air temperature or density such that the air stays still in a radiant heated room. Without circulating air, you feel warm because there is no cooling or drying effect on your skin.

According to Energy.gov, radiant floor heating systems can have other health benefits as well, such as increasing the circulation in the body. Since radiant floor heating systems warm bodies from the feet up, the feet stay warm, thereby causing better blood circulation. Most other heating systems cause the heat to linger around the head and ceiling area. The warm air heated from the floor stays down where we live, rather than being drawn up towards the ceiling.

Radiant floor heating systems also keep your furniture and draperies cleaner, because it is not forcefully blowing heat around the room and picking up and distributing dirt and grime onto the objects in the room. This also helps to lessen respiratory and allergy issues among the occupants of the home because overall, radiant floor heating systems help to maintain a cleaner environment.

The health benefits of radiant floor heating systems are great, but a consumer may ask, is it cost-effective? It is, according to This Old House plumbing and heating expert, Richard Trethewey, who is a longtime fan of radiant floor heating systems and says that they “increase comfort, as they reduce energy costs.”

ThisOldHouse.com also states that although there are upfront costs to installing radiant floor heating systems, it pays for itself very quickly by being up to 30% more efficient than most forced air heating systems.

The health benefits combined with its efficiency makes radiant floor heating systems a great choice for families today seeking to live in a cleaner and healthier home environment.

As 2013 gets into full swing, one of the bigger remodeling trends for bathrooms is installing for efficiency and safety. Starting from the floor up, people want bathrooms full of convenience, safe features and low utility costs. The first place to start is literally the floor.

One of the main design trends for bath re-modelers is incorporating a ceramic tile floor laid diagonally with ceramic tile base molding. Placing an electric radiant floor heating system underneath the tiling is one of the ways to meet the safety and efficiency standards people desire. If you’re going to remodel a bathroom, you want the very best, and radiant floor heating is the best. It’s a great feeling to step into the bathroom and a warm floor early in the morning or in the middle of the night.

You’ll keep the utility costs down by not expending as much heat into the bathroom. As we pointed out before, the safety of a radiant floor heating system translates to not having to wear socks in the bathroom either. You’ll be able to avoid slipping and falling with socks on.

According to Remodelers Magazine, “Measured against stabilizing house values, bathroom remodeling projects are increasing as bathrooms are one room that everyone uses multiple times in a given day.” As more people remodel their bathrooms, the more people are looking for radiant floor heating systems. One of the benefits of using Pexheat for a radiant floor systems is we will create a free project material estimate for you. There is no purchase required, no deposit, and no obligations of any kind.

What is it, and why should you choose that over a normal, more conventional one? For starters, their smaller size creates a more convenient space and frees up area in a utility closet or basement. Water-boilers can be quite large, but a condensing boiler will solve your space issue.

Perhaps the biggest benefit is the energy consumption you will cut with the installation of a condensing hot-water boiler. A boiler can consume about as much as its initial cost in fuel in a year. Combine that with the ever-growing utility rates and an increased awareness and focus on reducing wasted energy, people are always looking for a way to achieve greater efficiency. More and more hot water boilers and condensing boiler panels are available on the market, which is good for someone looking to make the switch to lower their energy consumption.

Today’s condensing boilers are state of the art, with advanced heat exchangers, burners, and controls. Although they cost more than non-condensing boilers, the lifespan is up to 25 years when properly maintained and installed. HPAC engineering wrote an article on selecting small condensing boilers, and offered this insight into the amount of savings you can have.

“Consider a case in which a condensing boiler costs $2,000 more than its non-condensing counterpart, but results in additional energy savings of $400 per year. That equates to a five-year simple payback ($2,000 divided by $400) and a 20-percent return on investment ($400 divided by $2,000).”

Making the switch to a condensing tankless water heater will make the same significant reduction in your hot water bill. We have a large selection of condensing boilers and tankless hot water heaters and control panels. Make the switch, your budget will thank you.

In fact, it accounts for a large number of injuries each year. Health.com writes, “Nearly 8 million people are injured in falls every year, either in or outside the home, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” Especially for children and the elderly, a tiled, linoleum or hardwood floor can be a dangerous scenario leading to a fall and broken bones or serious injury.

Most people wear socks in the home to keep their feet warm and cozy, especially in the colder months. This only adds to the danger. If you don’t want carpet in your home, and love the look of a nice hard surface, then a radiant floor will certainly curtail the problem. Not surprisingly, socks add to the friction and lessen the grip we have on the floor. A bare foot will give you additional traction, and with a radiant floor, they’ll remain nice and warm.

We tend to downplay most of our falls, blaming them on our own clumsiness or error. There are plenty of ways to avoid the issue and keep yourself safe, but a radiant floor might be one of the most effective. “An injury-producing fall can happen at any age—falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in people ages 25 to 54.”

Keep the look in your home you want, lower your energy bills and add some extra safety to the home by installing a radiant floor.

During this time of the year, keeping warmth in your home is crucial. Not only for saving money, but also for the comfort factor. With a radiant heating system, over all the feeling is more comfortable. Heat is down where we live rather than rising to the ceiling. When your feet are warm and your head is cooled down, you’re more comfortable and happy. Instead of just pumping out hot air, radiant systems create an all-around warmer feeling within the room.

When air is hot, the molecules of its makeup are further apart, so it takes up more room making it less dense than cold air and therefore, “lighter”. The rising heat of forced air will find cracks in the ceiling, roofs and windows, exiting the house. With radiant flooring, the heat remains lower as displayed in this picture.

The mild warmth of a radiant floor is a subtle experience. Once you’ve become accustomed to it, you won’t even notice a difference. Getting out of your warm bed right onto a warm floor is a smooth transition. A forced air system with air rising to the top gets lost and heads up right to the ceiling. You’ll get out of bed right onto a cold floor and feel it right away. This stratification effect becomes greater as the ceiling height becomes greater. When ceilings are hot and just below a cold roof, heat loss is quite high. It is precisely because of this effect that we insulate ceilings and attics so much.

If you’re looking for more comfort within your home, especially during this time of the year, a radiant floor heating system is the way to go. Check out our Pex tubing and electric radiant floor heating systems, and start transforming your home today.
